If your fear or phobia of something is causing panic and seems excessive to the point where you may be avoiding situations and places or it is causing you distress, you may need to seek help.

The difference between a fear and phobia:

Normal Fear

Phobia

Feeling anxious on a flight during turbulence

Missing a wedding because it is abroad

Feeling a bit dizzy when climbing a ladder 

Avoiding purchasing a beautifull apartment on the 9th floor because of your fear of height

Feeling a little nauseous when having an injection

Missing appointments and check ups for fear of needles 

Feeling a little nervous when seeing a pitbull terrier

Avoiding parks in case you see a dog 

Common phobias include :

Agoraphobia: a Fear of being in public and open spaces. It is now also believed to develop as a complication of panic attacks.

Situational phobias : A fear triggered by a certain factor such as being in an enclosed space (claustrophobia), flying, tunnels, and bridges.

Social phobia: also known as social anxiety disorder, where you feel self conscious and worried about being humiliated in front of people.

Animal phobias: fear of spiders, rodents, snakes and dogs.
